Acne can leave scars wherever it develops. One of the most painful places to scar, both physically and emotionally, is the back.
Acne scars can leave women choosing against backless dresses and men avoiding activities like swimming that would mean they had to take off their shirt.
But like all parts of the human body, the skin does a wonderful job of healing when it’s been injured. You have no trace left of most of your skinned knees, cuts, and scrapes from childhood, right? Even deeper scars like those from acne can be left behind if you give your skin a little help.
Best of all, the help does not need to be harsh or expensive. You can make non-toxic remedies at home in your kitchen that will fade acne scars and help your skin heal beautifully.
These 12 suggestions use natural ingredients that you probably already have in your cupboard.
Use Lemon Juice On Your Back
Lemon juice acts as a natural bleaching agent, and can lighten acne scars to the point of near disappearance. On top of that, lemon is full of vitamin C, which among its many benefits rebuilds collagen in the body.
Lime juice works in the same way, as it is full of many of the same nutrients.
Scarring develops when the collagen in the skin breaks down through injury or inflammation and infection, which is what acne is. The skin is elastic only to a point, and once the collagen fails, the skin starts to scar from rips and tears in the middle levels.
With lemon (or lime) juice, you can boost the collagen in your skin to repair scarring from acne. This natural remedy also prevents scarring from happening in the future.
By rebuilding the collagen, lemon or lime juice makes your skin less likely to rip and tear in the future. Its astringency also encourages pimples to disappear on their own overnight.
You probably already have lemons in the house – or the backyard. If you don’t, they’re an inexpensive addition to the shopping list. Lemon juice is also very easy to use – you just squeeze it out and apply it directly to your acne scars. If the acidity burns a little, you may want to dilute it with some water.
You’ll want to do this inside and not out in the sun, and then avoid going out uncovered right away, as lemon juice can make your skin temporarily sensitive to the sun’s rays. It’s always best to apply sunscreen.
You can also cut lemons in half and create an exfoliate with salt or sugar. Dip the lemon halves in the sugar/salt and then rub directly onto the skin while in the shower or bath.
Lemon juice will not only reduce the scarring – it cuts the risk of acne scars forming again. You should see results in a few weeks with this remedy for back acne scars – it works so well it’s worth trying first.
Use An Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera is one of the best natural healing agents in the world. It not only helps heal damaged tissue, but also soothes swollen skin, meaning those red acne scars can be reduced quickly.
Fresh gel is always best, and you can easily make it yourself using leaves from an aloe plant. You can buy over-the-counter options, but why spend the money for something you can do yourself?
When you cut open an aloe vera leaf, you will see a gel-like substance. This is what you want to apply directly onto your scars. You will start to see results right way, but it is best to keep using it for a couple of days to get the full effect.
This natural product will leave all your skin glowing. It tightens skin to give you a more youthful appearance. Don’t just use it on your back – use it anywhere you have scarring!
Aloe may not be widely available where you live. But it’s an easygoing succulent, a snap to grow if you don’t live in a rain forest – and well worth the investment as it also treats sunburn and kitchen burns better than anything else.
Baking Soda as an Exfoliate
Most people have baking soda in the house. This rising agent is an excellent natural remedy for all sorts of problems, whether you’re looking to whiten your teeth or get your washing machine to smell fresh.
Baking soda’s slightly rough texture makes it an excellent exfoliate for back acne scars. Just add a little water to a tablespoon of soda and work it into a paste, then pop it directly on the scars only, leaving it there for the skin to soak some of it in. Rinse with warm water and you’re ready to moisturize.
Or use baking soda with the lemon trick. Rather than using sugar or salt, dip a lemon or lime half into baking soda and use it as a scrub. You’ll exfoliate and get all the nutrients from the fruit.
You need to do this only two to three times a week. It will take some time to see the results, but it really does work and is affordable.
Moisturize with Olive Oil
Moisturizing your skin, especially after exfoliating, is important. You want a natural moisturizer that promotes healing, rather than the commercial moisturizers you can get over the counter. While aloe vera is one excellent option, olive oil is also great. The benefit of olive oil is that because it’s so good in cooking you probably already have it in your kitchen.
Olive oil contains a lot of vitamins and minerals, and is full of antioxidants. Not only will these work together to stop the skin inflammation related to acne, but olive oil also helps you fight against other diseases. Antioxidants fight against free radicals, reducing the risk of cancer!
Apply a few drops of olive oil directly to scars before you go to bed and leave it on overnight. You’ll want to sleep in an old T-shirt to protect your sheets. Let your skin soak in the healing properties so you see the benefits the next morning.
Wash any residue off the next morning, and you’re good to go. Once you’ve washed it off, pat yourself dry with a clean towel. You don’t want to ruin the hard work the natural ingredients have done.
Put Ice on the Scars
Ice is something everyone has. You have no excuse not to try this method.
The cold blocks work by tightening the pores in the skin, so the scars shrink in size.
Considering the size of most acne scars, they will look like they completely disappear.
Don’t apply the ice directly onto the skin! Like when reducing swelling after an injury, you need to wrap the ice up in a towel or item of clothing to avoid it getting stuck onto the body. Freezer burn does not look appealing.
If you’re looking for something more convenient, an icepack should do the trick.
After using the ice, you can mix it with another natural remedy like olive oil to keep the body working for you to remove the scars. This is another benefit of natural remedies.
You can make ice from normal water, but rose water could be an excellent healing option.
Rosewater and rose oil have long been used by the Iranians because of the healing properties for all parts of the body, including the skin.
Even scientific research has shown that rose does offer the medicinal benefits that ancient medicine has long believed.
Rosewater continues to be one of the first things Iranians will try, and is highly effective against insect bites to prevent scarring.
With that in mind, it should be highly effective against acne scarring and improving the look of the skin.
Make an Egg White Mask
Egg whites are not only easy to find, but they are also extremely effective in healing any type of scarring. Acne scars on the back tend to be the hardest to get rid of, but egg whites will really help because of the amount of protein they contain.
You don’t need to whisk the whites. You want them runny, so they can act as a mask. Apply them directly to the scarring, and you will notice a visible reduction within a few days.
Why does the protein matter? This is how cellular tissue is formed. Your skin needs it to heal, and while you can get it by eating it, you’re speeding up the process by applying it directly to your skin.
This is something you can do overnight or just in the hours before you go to bed. Wash it off with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. You can also mix it with something like aloe vera gel to see results as soon as possible.
Crush Up Mint Leaves
While we’re at it, have you considered mint?
This is not often considered a natural remedy for skin, but it really does work. Mint is full of healing properties, and helps not only with scarring on the back but will also help reduce any acne on your face. It’s also extremely easy to use.
All you need is to crush some mint leaves. This releases the healing properties so they work as soon as they reach the skin. The juice is the bit that you need, but you can rub the juice in with the mint leaves to get the full benefit.
Mint is full of antioxidants. Like the ones in olive oil, they help you fight against the free radicals that cause cancer. Other nutrients help decontaminate the blood, so acne is less likely to appear again in the future.
Of course, you need to look after your skin to get the full benefit of any treatment you try. This means eating your vegetables, drinking a good 10 glasses of water every day, and trying not to stress out about things. You might also try giving up dairy products for a couple of weeks to see whether that makes a difference for your skin.
Repeat the use of mint as often or as little as you like. Twice a day is viewed as the best option, and you should use it until you see the scarring disappear.
Another option with mint is to turn it into a paste with honey (another herbal remedy for healing). The two working together will help to get rid of acne scars overnight, and will offer your skin some glowing benefits. You can also use this as a mask for your face!
How you should apply the mint paste will depend on your skin type. If you have oily skin, you’ll want to use gram flour instead of honey and use rose water to turn it into a paste, and leave it on for a few hours. Honey is best for dry or normal skin, as it will also help to moisturize. Try to leave that one on overnight.
Place Potato on Your Back
Who would have thought potatoes were good for more than being baked, boiled, or mashed? Raw potato is an excellent home remedy for those red acne scars. It won’t work overnight, though, and requires daily use for a week or so. The best news is that it takes very little preparation to make this ingredient work.
All you need is thinly sliced raw potato. Place that directly on the skin and rub in circles. Over time, the potato will go dry, and that is when you remove it from your back. Then use another slice, and keep repeating this process for around 20 minutes. This is definitely something to do at home while you’re watching a movie or your favourite TV show!
Your skin will soak up the water and nutrients in the potato slices. Give it a few minutes for your back to dry completely and then wash with lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean towel and apply a healing natural moisturizer.
Depending on the size of your scars, it can take a couple of months to see the full results of this remedy. But you will start to see some results sooner.
Patience is key, but remember you can always mix with other healing remedies to make sure you really do get rid of those acne scars. If your scars are red, potato will start to get rid of the redness quickly so you can then focus on the actual scarring.
Create an Oatmeal Mask
Another natural ingredient perfect for making a mask is oatmeal. It’s also something most people, especially those with kids, have in the house! There’s a reason so many people consider oats the perfect start to the day.
Oats contain fibre and oil that work with the skin to help tighten pores and clear out the system. They purge toxins and promote healthier-looking skin. It won’t take much to turn your oatmeal into a mask and apply directly to your back.
Start with oats and rosewater. It should turn into a fine glue, and you need it on your back for only around 15 to 20 minutes; perfect for while you’re watching your weekly TV show.
For even more healing properties, you could mix in some raw honey. This gives you the benefit of vitamin C working into the skin too, so the collagen rebuilds. Just wash the honey off with lukewarm water and apply a moisturizing cream afterwards.
The honey is really a bonus. It doesn’t make the list of home remedies because there are so many, but does offer healing properties and works well within other remedies. The honey can also be used with oatmeal directly onto acne as a prevention method to stop scars from forming.
Make a Yoghurt and Cucumber Juice
The lactic acid in plain yoghurt is full of healing properties. Yoghurt is full of natural acids, which help to lighten the skin and allow scars to blend in, similar to the way that lemon and lime juice work.
The yoghurt will also help to rejuvenate the skin, encouraging dead cells to shed so the new cells come through. This instantly reduces the look of the scarring.
Cucumber is also rich in nutrients—not just water! It has vitamin C, which we’ve already talked about for collagen repair, and is full of vitamins A and B1, which both help to reduce scarring, whether from injury or acne. The water in cucumber makes it revitalizing. The skin will soak up the moisture, also helping to repair the collagen.
Making a juice with the two to apply to the skin is very easy: Juice the cucumber and then add yoghurt. (You want to use plain yoghurt and not one of those with all the flavours, as they have a lot of extra sugars.) Mixing the two together will create a kind of glue that you then apply directly to your back acne scars.
Sit with the paste on for about 20 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. If you are short on time, you can leave it on for just a few minutes—though the longer you leave it on, the more the skin is able to absorb all its healing properties.
Use Apple Cider Vinegar Directly
As a natural disinfectant, apple cider vinegar has become a home remedy for a lot of needs. For those with acne scars, it is a go-to option.
The benefit is in its acidity which, like lemon juice, helps to bleach the skin, so scarring looks better. Another benefit is its anti-inflammatory properties, just what you need to get rid of red acne scars. Apple cider vinegar also works well on pimples that have just formed.
A third benefit is its antibacterial properties. When you use apple cider vinegar, you are removing dirt and grime from the pores, reducing the risk of acne forming again, especially if you use it regularly.
Apple cider vinegar has no limits to its usefulness. It is full of various vitamins and minerals, along with ketones and antioxidants. Together with the acid, they work to fight off various infections and diseases while improving the look of your skin. This is why so many swear by it for all their needs and always keep a bottle in the house.
To use apple cider vinegar, mix it with an equal amount of water. This is good for those with sensitive skin, as applying just the vinegar can cause irritation. Use a cotton ball to dab the mixture directly onto the scars. Leave to soak for 10 minutes and then wash off. You just need to do this once a day.
Another option is to mix with honey. You will need some water as well, with more water than apple cider vinegar and honey. Again, use a cotton ball to apply the mixture directly to the back scars. You’ll want to leave this mixture on for about 30 minutes instead. Lukewarm water is the best option to remove it all, because it will get rid of the sticky feeling from the honey.
Both of these options are best used just once a day. You will not get rid of the acne scars overnight, but you will soon see a clear reduction in the size and colour.
Use Raw Tomatoes on Your Skin
Like several other ingredients already mentioned, tomatoes are full of acid. They help to reduce the colouration of the scarring so it is much less noticeable. But that is not the only benefit.
Tomatoes are also full of natural healing ingredients. Like lemon juice, they contain large amounts of vitamin C, so will help to rebuild collagen. The redness of tomatoes comes from carotenes, which are full of antioxidants.
Not only will antioxidants fight cancer—as already mentioned—they also help to repair and rebuild damaged tissue. This is their way of helping to fade acne scars overnight.
One of the simplest ways to use tomatoes to remove scars is by slicing them up and applying them directly to the skin. You can give your body a chance to soak in all the juices and really benefit from the nutrients.
You can also crush the tomatoes and turn them into a pulp, and then place that directly on your skin. Whichever of these two you choose, leave for 15-20 minutes and then wash off.
Another option is to make a mask with other home remedies. Cucumbers and avocados work well with tomatoes for a scar-removing face mask. Put equal parts of all three in a blender to turn them into a mask. Apply directly to the affected area and leave for about 20 minutes.
As with the other options, wash off with lukewarm water and then pat dry with a clean towel. The lukewarm water prevents the skin from becoming red and inflamed, while patting dry helps protect the skin from further damage.
Those with sensitive skin may find tomatoes too acidic. If you’re considering applying just tomato pulp, try mixing it with water. You could find the irritation is lessened.
Mix The Methods Together
One of the biggest benefits of home remedies is that they can be used together. The natural ingredients combine well, without the unknown effects of mixing chemicals that you can get with over-the-counter solutions. Consider starting with a lemon-sugar scrub, use your tomato and avocado face mask, and then finish off with bit of olive oil to moisturize.
By allowing all the home remedies to work together, you may find that you are able to get rid of acne scars overnight. The body takes advantage of all the healing properties in multiple ingredients, absorbing more than you ever thought possible.
Make sure you apply all the remedies directly to the scarring. You may be tempted to eat or drink them instead, but your skin won’t get the full benefit.
While the body absorbs the healing properties, they are broken down in the digestive system. Using them directly on the skin ensures the skin actually absorbs the nutrients and fades acne scars overnight.
Prevention Is Better Than Treatment
Of course, the best way to get rid of scarring is to not let it happen in the first place.
Some of the methods above are great for preventing acne from forming at all, or can be used directly for acne. They will reduce the inflammation and redness, and you’re less likely to scratch or pop.
Popping pimples is often what causes scarring. The skin is fragile, and popping pimples leads to it tearing. The best thing you can do is prevent scars from forming at all by leaving your pimples to heal on their own—and they really will!
The only time you want to put your hands anywhere near your acne scars is when you’re applying a healing ingredient. Picking at your pimples is a bad idea, and not just because it causes scarring.
Your skin is more likely to get infected, and this can cause damage to lower layers. Your acne will look worse, and you’ll end up with deeper scars in the future.
Always try to avoid exposing your skin to the sun. You need only 15 minutes of sun each day on your unprotected skin to get your recommended amount of vitamin D, and you should do that outside of peak sun hours.
All other times, either cover your skin with clothing or use sunscreen. This is especially important when it comes to scars. The sun will make scars look a lot worse than they really are. Scar tissue burns more easily than undamaged skin, making scars stand out much more.
When to Move on from Natural Remedies
If you’ve tried all the natural remedies above and aren’t satisfied with the results, it may be time to move onto something else. Unfortunately, some scars are just too deep for natural products to help remove. You will need something from a dermatologist to help.
The benefit of trying natural methods first is that they are an affordable experiment. Your skin will benefit from their natural healing properties however much you use them.
You can usually keep using the natural remedies when using something from your dermatologist. Talk to the specialist first, but in most cases the natural ingredients don’t contain anything that will harm you or interfere with an over-the-counter product or a prescription drug.
Trying out natural remedies before opting for drugstore treatments is the best way to go. Not only will these natural treatments nourish and protect your skin while getting rid of scars, but also they will help you save money while saving your skin from the side effects of chemicals present in unnatural remedies.
